What Size Awning Do I Need?

When choosing a premium awning, colour, style, and fabric are all exciting decisions — but getting the right size is just as important.

At Aura Awnings, every product is made to measure, but you’ll still need to decide on two key dimensions: width and projection. Here’s what those terms mean, and how to work out the perfect fit for your home.

What is Awning Width?

Width is the measurement across the wall where your awning will be installed. It’s determined by the length of the wall-mounted cassette that houses the awning fabric and arms.

To get a rough idea:

  1. Use a tape measure to mark a horizontal line along the wall where you want the awning to sit.

  2. Measure straight across, even if gutters or downpipes are in the way — these can be worked around with specialist brackets.

What is Awning Projection?

Projection is how far your awning extends out from the wall when fully opened. It doesn’t take the angle (pitch) into account — so you measure straight out from the wall to where you’d like the edge of the fabric to be.

This determines how much shaded or sheltered space you’ll have underneath.

Width to Projection — The Golden Ratio

As a general guide, the projection is often around 0.5 metres less than the width. For example:

  • 3.0m width × 2.5m projection is a popular choice for patios and seating areas.

But this isn’t a strict rule — we can design to your exact requirements.

Special Options for Unique Spaces

  • Stretch Awnings — Ideal for narrow walls where you still want a deep projection. These use offset folding arms to achieve a larger projection than width.

  • Coupled Awnings — Perfect for wide terraces. Two or more awnings are installed side-by-side to create the look of one seamless unit.
